Dates and times for visits

The Château du Taureau is entirely surrounded by the sea. Even at the lowest tide, you still need a boat to get there.

The tides decide when it’s possible to visit the Château du Taureau, and this has always been the case! The slipway is only accessible when the water level is between 3 metres and 8.5 metres: any lower and the slipway is dry; any higher and the slipway disappears under the sea.

The Château du Taureau

Initially built in the 1500s by Morlaix residents to protect them English looters, the Château du Taureau was restored and extended by French architect Vauban, on the orders of King Louis XIV. After this, the fortress was used as a defensive stronghold, an offshore prison, a holiday home and even a sailing school before nearly falling into ruin in the 1980s.

Exploring this offshore fortress is a real journey into the heart of history.
